Offering new hope for sportspersons and patients recovering from injuries, VPS Lakeshore Hospital has performed Asia’s first Nanoscopic ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair using Nano scope Operative Arthroscopy System in sports surgery — a revolutionary, minimally invasive tool for diagnosing and treating sports injuries.
The innovative nanoscope system marks a major leap in sports surgery, enabling surgeons to visualise and treat knee joint issues such as meniscal and ACL tears with exceptional precision and minimal trauma. Unlike conventional arthroscopy, which requires larger incisions, the nanoscope allows the entire procedure to be performed through a needle-sized entry point, minimising tissue damage, accelerating recovery, and reducing postoperative discomfort.
Dr. George Jacob, Consultant Knee Surgeon at VPS Lakeshore, performed Asia’s first nanoscopic ACL surgery using the new system last week. He said, “Reducing the incision to the size of a needle minimizes blood loss, postoperative pain, and hospital stay. It’s been exciting to bring this technology to our practice”. I’ve even started using it and found it useful in fracture surgery fixation, where I can visualize joint surfaces in real time as I fix them.”
“The nanoscope technology allows us to confirm radiological findings through a needle-sized incision,” explained Dr. Jacob Varughese, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at VPS Lakeshore Hospital. “In addition, it enables the surgeon to obtain two simultaneous views of the joint — front and back — greatly enhancing precision during surgery.”
This next-generation arthroscopic innovation offers significant benefits for athletes and active individuals, including faster recovery, reduced pain, and early return to sport.
Highlighting the hospital’s commitment to technological advancement, SK Abdulla, Managing Director of VPS Lakeshore Hospital, said the institution consistently strives to integrate the latest global healthcare innovations. “At VPS Lakeshore, we follow a specialist approach that combines cutting-edge technologies with the expertise of our world-class doctors. We were the first hospital in the country to perform wireless arthroscopy. Over the past year, we have introduced robotic joint replacement, AI integration, 3D printing, and now nanoscopic surgery in orthopaedics. We will continue to push boundaries and lead innovation to enhance patient outcomes and clinical excellence,” he added.
