For the first time in Kerala, minimally invasive Spine Surgery performed at VPS Lakeshore
Kochi: For the first time in Kerala, minimally invasive or keyhole spine surgery was successfully performed on a 65-year old man, T G Varghese, hailing from Kollam, for treating fracture of the spine in VPS Lakeshore.
The surgery was performed by using the American technology, Viper 2 system, in which only 1-2cm long incisions were made to put specially designed titanium implants into the spine under image guidance to treat the fracture. It was the first minimally invasive spine surgery performed in the state using the Viper 2 technology, claimed VPS Lakeshore. The hospital authorities said that the patient made fast recovery and started walking on the next day itself.
The surgery was performed by a medical team led by Dr. Krishnakumar, Consultant Spine Surgeon, VPS Lakeshore. “The advantages of minimally invasive spine surgery include small scar, reduced operation time, less bleeding, no wound drain and early recovery,” he said. The doctor added that usually such fractures are treated with open spine surgery with long surgical incisions and further bed rest.
The patient was suffering from severe pain and bedridden due to the fracture of the spine for the past two weeks. The fracture happened due to a condition called multiple myeloma, a type of cancer formed by malignant plasma cells and patient developed spontaneous fracture on the spine. The patient initially took treatment from a local traditional ayurvedic practitioner. As the treatment failed to provide any relief, he later approached a hospital in Kollam. Doctors at that hospital referred him to VPS Lakeshore.
